Midland Claims Service, Inc. has been recognized as one of Billings’ and Montana’s outstanding family businesses in the category of very small businesses as a recipient of the State Farm Montana Family Business Program awards, presented each year by the Montana State University Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship.
The company, launched in the 1940s, is a leader in its field under the direction of Michael Marsh, President, who represents the second generation of a business that has been sustained by three generations of Marshes. Midland Claims is the largest claim services provider for self-insured workers compensation administration in Montana.
Besides Michael, other members of the family involved in the business include Michael’s parents, Barbara and Jim Marsh, and his daughter, Lauren Marsh.
Last year, Michael Marsh received the first ever Governor’s Achievement Award for Outstanding Workers Compensation Professional. The award was given in recognition of Michael’s “Integrity and Professionalism in the field of Workers’ Compensation.”
The company was founded by Gordon Hauck in the 1940s, after having worked for a couple of years for the General Adjustment Bureau. Jim Marsh joined MCSi as an adjuster. In the mid-1960s, Jim and two other adjusters bought the company, and eventually, Jim became the sole stockholder.
Under Jim’s leadership the company grew rapidly by applying concepts and policies regarding relationships and providing quality service, and by doing the “right thing” in what is often a very complex and challenging legal environment.
In the 1980s, the company grew to six offices in Montana and two in Washington. In 1984, Jim decided to retire and sold the company to a similar company in Idaho, but within three years that company went bankrupt and Jim took the company back in 1987.
Michael at that time was vice-president of claims for an insurance company in California, but he was able to be involved with MCSi. Jim Marsh was hired as a consultant to assist in settling and concluding hundreds of litigated claims throughout the US. MSCi was resurrected, operated by Jim and his wife, Barbara, from the basement of their home for over ten years.
In 1999, Michael and his family, which now included two baby girls, moved back to Montana to raise their children here. Jim retired and Michael bought the business, with Jim remaining a Director of the company. From 1999 through 2016, the company expanded heavily into the area of providing Workers’ Compensation, third part administrator services, specializing in proving world-class service to self-insured companies operating in, and employing residents of the State of Montana.
Michael has been with the company since 1974, excluding his time in the California insurance industry from 1986-1999. Lauren has worked at Midland Claims Service, Inc. since 2005. In December 2013, Lauren graduated Montana State University - -Bozeman, with a major in Sociology and a minor in Spanish. Lauren is now a licensed insurance producer for property, casualty and bond insurance for Montana and works with Michael as a Special Projects Consultant.
