The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted affirmatively on an order that will accelerate investment in and deployment of 5G technology, which is critical to the competitiveness and success of America’s small businesses. Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement on the FCC’s vote:
“Access to fast and reliable broadband is important to the growth and pursuit of entrepreneurship in every corner of the United States. Today’s action by the FCC, led by Commissioner Brendan Carr, means America’s entrepreneurs and small businesses can plan on a future that enables their growth. Our risk-takers will have access to the technology they need to start strong, reach and serve customers where they are, and grow successfully. The FCC’s bold action will accelerate the availability of 5G technology, which means our economy and businesses will be more innovative, resilient and competitive.”
The FCC order streamlines and modernizes the permit process for wireless infrastructure projects. A study by Accenture found that the reforms will save Americans nearly $1.6 billion and result in 55,000 wireless deployments.
Kerrigan added: “Entrepreneurs are ready for 5G, and it is exciting to see government taking supportive action to get this tool into their businesses. Artificial impediments to growth not only hurt these small businesses and their communities, they undermine the U.S. economy and competitiveness in the global marketplace. It’s great to see the FCC enthused and taking action to win the 5G race.”
