Kris Carpenter has been named SBA’s 2018 Montana Woman-owned Small Business of the Year.

Carpenter established Sanctuary Spa and Salon (“Sanctuary”) in 1998 on the west end of Billings.  Sanctuary is a full service spa and salon offering hair, makeup, waxing, body treatments, massage, facials, nails, and retail.  The salon carries AVEDA products and offers a high end, personalized, quality experience to its customers.  The staff is expertly trained and clients return again and again while providing an unprecedented level of referrals.

The salon is an industry leader, offering competitive pay and full benefits to its 35 employees, and has been recognized for four years by Salon Today as one of the nation’s top 200 salons.

With the success of her flagship business, Kris turned her attention to a second business that shares retail space with Sanctuary. The Joy of Living opened in 2010 and features unique gifts from fun and whimsical to heartfelt and practical. Her goal was to provide a shopping experience where people would come to buy one-of-a-kind gifts for others and occasionally splurge on themselves.  The store was a hit and in the past year, she opened a second Joy of Living location in downtown Billings with extended hours, and open on Sundays.

Black Dog Coffee is her newest venture, and Kris is part-owner along with family members.  The neighborhood coffee shop operates alongside her other two businesses on the west end of Billings, and also downtown.

Kris has a lifelong commitment to women and community service.  She mentors other owners in her industry and provides financial and strategic business consulting.  Her drive and passion to improve the lives of others makes her a force to be reckoned with.  Her success shows in her businesses and the people who work with her and her many community partnerships.

Sanctuary Spa and owner Kris Carpenter were nominated by Melanie Schwarz, Director of Marketing and Member Investors at Big Sky Economic Development.
